Overlays

What is an overlay? An overlay is a thin cement coating that is applied over structurally sound concrete surface to give the existing concrete a new look without the mess, hassle, and cost of tearing out and repouring the existing slab.

The successful completion of any overlay requires extensive experience and prep work. Overlay materials are applied much differently than poured concrete and knowing how to work with them is something that is learned over time.

Overlays are ideal for adding pattern, texture, and color to existing concrete slabs, where tearing out and replacing the existing concrete is too labor intensive or destructive. Most of the time we find that this situation applies to porches, pool decks and interior floors.

Before you read any further, though, it's important to be aware that not all existing concrete should be resurfaced. The underlying base for an overlay must be sound. If your concrete is heaving, is extensively cracked, or has severe spalling, resurfacing will not solve your problems. Overlay materials usually cost more per square foot than full thickness concrete, so in most cases it is more economical to simply tear out the old concrete and replace it with new 4” stamped concrete.

Below are the main two types of overlays we do at Rockford Stamped Concrete:

Stamped Concrete Overlays

A stamped overlay offers all the aesthetic benefits of conventional stamped concrete but is thinner. Semi-flexible stamping tools are available in dozens of patterns, allowing us to duplicate the beauty and texture of natural stone, brick, slate, wood planking, and other materials. In addition, nearly any color can be added to these overlays, making your options many when it comes to design. Stamped overlay thickness is around 3/8 inch, so a few of the patterns we use for full thickness concrete won’t work but a large majority will.

Before opting for a stamped overlay, we will determine if your concrete can be resurfaced successfully.

Spray-Down Concrete Toppings

Spray-down concrete systems offer a wide array of finish options. They are sprayed evenly onto concrete with an air-powered hopper gun, but they can also be applied as a splatter coat to create a textured, slip-resistant surface or "knocked down" with a trowel to create a smoother finish.

This product is often used for concrete pool decks and patios to give them a decorative slip-resistant finish because of their durability, low cost, ease of application, and range of patterns and colors.

We also cover unsightly concrete retaining walls with this product.

We have done other types of overlays like “skip trowel” finishes in the past. These other types of finishes can provide a unique look to your concrete. If you have an idea in mind or a finish you like that you don’t see, please inquire about it.
